The increasing knowledge of the classical texts improves gradually the historical reconstruction of the event and poses new questions. Some variae lectiones from greek and roman authors are also discussed in order to draw more accurate conclusions. Particularly is examined the probable source of the Isidorus’ strange number (70.000) in Or. VI, 3, 5, concerning the amount of books destroyed by the fire. ER -
